Checking your usage and quota

Quick summary of usage and quotas

There are three ways to get a quick summary of your Internet usage and quotas:

  • The first way to check your daily and session quotas is to use the "acc" or "pp" command from any prompt on one of the school's Unix workstations (eg. in a lab). This will show you full details about your account, including class memberships, when your account will expire and your current Internet quotas.

The quota information in the "acc" or "pp" output is updated nightly.

  • The second way to examine your quotas and to see your current usage is by using the "ipq" command at any Unix workstation prompt. The database used by this command is updated every 15 minutes and so will show you in almost real-time your usage.

  • The third way to examine your daily Internet usage is to use the
"priv ipq_summary" command at any Unix workstation prompt. This displays a history of your Internet usage as calculated at midnight every day. Under the field "QQQ", where "Q=1" you are recorded as having exceeded your quota for that day.
Check the man pages for these commands for more details on their use.

Detailed log of Internet usage

The "priv ipq_list YYYY-MM-DD" command can be used to show a detailed log of your Internet usage for a particular day. Simply run the command with the date in which you are interested in place of the YYYY-MM-DD.

Note that due to their size logs are only kept for six weeks. Usage logs become available approximately five hours after usage occurs.
